How to Make Crispy Grated Tofu in the Oven

I’ve been eating tofu for years, but it wasn’t until a couple years ago that I finally tried grated tofu, and i was hooked! It’s now my favourite way of making it.

The texture is incredible! The best part is also that it couldn’t be simpler, just grated it, season it and bake until crispy!

It’s perfect as a topping for pretty much anything, but I like to have it in wraps, like fajitas or these tacos

Crispy Grated Tofu – What Ingredients You’ll Need

How to Make Crispy Grated Tofu in the Oven
  • Tofu: A combination of regular and smoked tofu adds a balance of texture and flavor but you can use of the two as well!
  • Paprika: For a smoky kick that enhances the tofu’s taste.
  • Garlic and Cumin: These spices provide depth and warmth to the dish.
  • Soy Sauce: Adds umami and saltiness to the grated tofu.
  • Oil: Helps achieve a slightly crispy, golden finish when cooking the tofu.

Crispy Grated Tofu – Instructions Step by Step

Prepare the tofu:

  • Take your blocks of regular and smoked tofu and grate them using the largest side of a box grater.
  • In a bowl, mix the grated tofu with paprika, garlic powder, cumin, soy sauce, and oil. Stir until the tofu is evenly coated with the spices.

Cook the tofu:

  • Prepare a baking tin by brushing it with oil, or use baking paper instead.
  • Add the tofu to it spreading it into a think layer.
  • Cook at 190C/375F for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is golden and slightly crispy.
  • Now it’s ready to enjoy with your favourite dish, it’s great in fajitas, I used it for these tacos and it was delicious!

Storage Instructions

Store the grated tofu mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep fresh for up to 3 days. When ready to eat, reheat the tofu in a skillet over medium heat to restore its crispy texture.

How to serve it

I like to have it as part of fajitas in tortillas with pepper, onion and avocado or as part of these grated tofu tacos!

Variations

  • Spice it up: Add a pinch of chili powder or cayenne pepper to the tofu mixture for extra heat
  • Cheesy touch: Sprinkle nutritional yeast on the tofu mixture while cooking for a cheesy, umami flavor.
  • Gluten-free: Use tamari instead of soy sauce
