Sweet potato fritters are a delicious, easy-to-make, and versatile dish that packs both flavor and nutrition in every bite. They’re crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They come together quickly and they are simple to make.
Whether you’re craving a crunchy snack, a side dish for a meal, or a base for a creative topping, these fritters are a perfect go-to. Made from wholesome ingredients, they are gluten-free and loaded with vitamins.
I love to make fritters of all sorts of vegetables but these with sweet potatoes are probably my favourites so far! No need to precook anything, super simple to make and they are delicious! They’re also gluten free and dairy free.
I like to serve it as a side or appetizer with a simple yogurt sauce made with soy greek yogurt, lemon juice and fresh chives.

Recipe Instructions With Pictures
Prep the Vegetables:
Peel and grate the sweet potato and carrot into a large bowl. Chop the spring onions and add them to the bowl
Add the dr Ingredients:
Add the chickpea flour, cornstarch, fresh chives, paprika, mixed dried herbs, salt, and pepper to the grated vegetables. Stir well to combine.
Add Water
Gradually add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the mixture holds together. You may not need all 5 tablespoons—just enough to bind the mixture. It should be moist but not overly wet.
Shape the Fritters
Take a small handful of the mixture and form it into a round, flat fritter. The flatter they are the more crispy they will get. Repeat until all the mixture is used.
Cook the Fritters
- For Pan-Frying:
Pour vegetable oil in a frying pan ( 1⁄4 to 3⁄4 inch deep) over medium heat. Fry the fritters in batches, cooking for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. - For Air-Frying:
Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F). Brush or spray the fritters with olive oil and air fry for about 8 minutes on each side, but make sure to check halfway, as depending on the shape they might take longer or less time to become crispy
Tips for the Best Sweet Potato Fritters
Here are a few tips to ensure your sweet potato fritters come out perfectly every time:
- Don’t Overdo the Water: When adding water to the mixture, start with just a few tablespoons and add more gradually as needed. The mixture should be moist but not overly wet. Too much water will make it difficult for the fritters to hold their shape, especially during frying.
- Shape the Fritters Uniformly: For even cooking, make sure all your fritters are roughly the same size and thickness. This helps them cook evenly, so you don’t end up with some that are overcooked while others remain underdone.
- Cook in Batches: Whether you’re frying or air-frying, it’s important not to overcrowd the pan or air fryer. Cooking in small batches ensures that each fritter has enough space to cook evenly and get crispy.
