If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing appetizer, a comforting snack, or even an impressive addition to your dinner table, this Pull-Apart Pizza Dough Spiral is the answer.
This is a recipe my mum makes every Christmas, along with a bunch of other tasty finger foods. She also whips it up whenever she has people over – and everyone loves it!
Made with store-bought pizza dough, olive oil, and fresh rosemary, this dish is delightfully simple yet packed with flavor. It’s perfect for those moments when you want something homemade but without too much effort.
Pull Apart Pizza Dough Spiral – What You Need
- Ready-made pizza dough
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Fresh rosemary
- Salt
Pull Apart Pizza Dough Spiral – Step By Step Instructions
Divide the dough into two equal portions. On a floured surface, roll out one portion of the dough into a rectangle shape. If using round dough, roll it out evenly to achieve a similar thickness.
Generously brush the surface of the rolled-out dough with olive oil.
Sprinkle the chopped rosemary evenly over the top, followed by the sea salt. Flip the dough over and repeat the process on the other side.
Repeat these steps for the second portion of dough.
Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice the seasoned dough into thick strips. Each strip should be about 4 cm wide and as long as the rolled-out dough.
Take the first strip and roll it tightly onto itself to form a small coil. Place this coil at the end of the next strip and roll it up, continuing to expand the coil. Once the spiral becomes larger, transfer it to a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Lay the spiral flat and continue adding strips, rolling and attaching them as you go. Pinch the ends of each strip to ensure they stay securely attached.
Brush the top of the completed spiral with an additional layer of olive oil. This step ensures the top bakes to a beautiful golden-brown color.
Preheat your oven to 180°C (375°F). Bake the spiral for 30 minutes, uncovered. Then, cover the spiral loosely with a piece of parchment paper to prevent over-browning, and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes.
Check the inner rolls with a toothpick to ensure they are cooked through. The dough should be golden but not too golden brown as it will result too dry.
Remove the spiral from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Place it on a serving platter and enjoy tearing apart the flavorful, aromatic layers! Serve it as is or with a dipping sauce like marinara.
Tips for Success
- Use High-Quality Ingredients: Since this recipe relies on just a few components, each ingredient matters. Opt for good-quality extra virgin olive oil and fresh rosemary to ensure the best flavor.
- Room Temperature Dough: Cold pizza dough can be difficult to work with. Letting it sit at room temperature for a few minutes makes it more pliable and easier to roll.
- Customize the Flavor: While rosemary is the star here, you can experiment with other herbs like thyme or oregano. You could also add a sprinkle of grated vegan or regular cheese for an indulgent twist.
- Mind the Baking Time: Keep an eye on the spiral as it bakes to prevent overcooking. Every oven varies slightly, so check for that perfect golden color.
